Animal Monday: Hawaiian Monk Seal

May 22, 2023
This week’s issue of Animal Monday presents the Hawaiian Monk Seal, a lovable seal that looks a lot like a Monk’s scowl (below:) due to wrinkles in its face. The Hawaiian Monk Seal is able to hold its breath underwater for up to 20 minutes and can dive to a depth of 1,800 ft. However, they usually dive an average of six minutes to depths of less than 200 feet to forage at the seafloor. Hawaiian Monk Seals prefer to be solitary, usually sleeping on beaches or in sea caves. The female Monk Seals are generally larger than their male counterparts, as mature male Hawaiian Monk Seals may reach maximum lengths of 2.1 m (6.9 ft.), while the adult females may measure as much as 2.4 m (7.75 ft.). What makes the Monk Seals unique among their blubbery brothers and sisters, is that they live in tropical habitats rather than the colder biomes of their cousins.
